The New Economy and Economic Growth in Developing Countries: Speculations on the Meaning of Information Technology for Emerging Markets
Abstract This paper discusses ways that we may conceptualize of the New Economy’s effect on the Emerging Markets. In particular, it focuses on how ‘sustainability’ in economic development can be understood in terms of productivity improvements in Emerging Markets. Three notions of productivity are discussed: productivity increases from greater human capital investments, efficiency gains from information technology use in business transactions, and improvements in technology that lead to more efficient labor. The paper discusses how these productivity improvements may shape the way that information technology is used in Emerging Markets, and how these economies benefit from information technology. Lastly, the paper suggests concrete ways that these types of productivity improvements can be promoted in the developing economy context.
